Is It Termite Swarm Season? What Arizona Homeowners Need to Watch for This Spring

Is It Termite Swarm Season? What Arizona Homeowners Need to Watch for This Spring | Neff Exterminating

If you've ever seen a sudden cloud of winged insects emerge from your yard or exterior walls in the spring, there's a good chance you witnessed a termite swarm. It's one of the most alarming things a homeowner can see — and one of the clearest warning signs that a termite colony is active on or near your property.

Spring is peak termite swarm season in Arizona, including right here in the White Mountains. At Neff Exterminating, our technicians start fielding termite calls every April as conditions warm up. Here's what you need to know to protect your home.

What Is a Termite Swarm?

Termite swarms — also called "nuptial flights" — are how colonies reproduce and spread. When a colony reaches a certain size and maturity, it produces alates: winged reproductive termites that fly out in large numbers to mate and start new colonies.

A swarm typically lasts only 30–40 minutes and often happens in the late morning or early afternoon, triggered by warmth and humidity after a rain event. After landing, the termites shed their wings and attempt to pair up and establish new nests in soil or wood.

Here's the critical thing to understand: a swarm doesn't mean termites are just arriving — it means a mature colony has been living nearby, possibly for years. Termite colonies typically take 3–5 years to reach swarming size. By the time you see a swarm, significant activity may already be underway.

Termite Species Common to the White Mountains Area

Arizona is home to several termite species, and the White Mountains region sees activity from a few key types:

Subterranean Termites

The most destructive and most common species in Arizona. They live in the soil and build mud tubes to travel between the ground and their food source — the wood in your home. They work silently inside walls and structural members, often going undetected until damage is severe.

Arid-Land Subterranean Termites

A species well-adapted to Arizona's higher elevations. They're particularly common in the White Mountains and can be active year-round in protected wall voids, even when outdoor temperatures are cold.

Drywood Termites

Unlike subterranean species, drywood termites nest directly inside wood — no soil contact required. They're often introduced through infested furniture or lumber and can be harder to detect without a professional inspection.

Warning Signs of Termite Activity This Spring

Termites earn their reputation as "silent destroyers" — by the time damage is visible, it's often extensive. But there are signs to watch for, especially in spring:

Swarmers or Discarded Wings

Seeing winged insects emerge from your soil, walls, or wood, or finding piles of small wings near windowsills or light fixtures, is one of the clearest indicators of a nearby colony.

Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites build pencil-width mud tubes along foundations, crawl space walls, or floor joists. These shelter tubes protect them from light and drying out. If you find one, break a small section off — if it's repaired within a day or two, the colony is active.

Hollow-Sounding Wood

Tap on wood beams, door frames, or baseboards. If they sound hollow or papery, termites may have consumed the interior while leaving the surface intact.

Tight-Fitting Doors or Windows

As termites damage wood and their tunneling generates moisture, it can cause wood to warp and swell — making doors and windows difficult to open or close.

Frass (Termite Droppings)

Drywood termites push their droppings — tiny pellets that look like sawdust or coffee grounds — out of small holes in wood. Finding these near wood structures is a red flag.

If you notice any of these signs, don't wait to schedule an inspection. Every day of delay is another day of potential structural damage.

Why Spring Inspections Matter

Getting ahead of termite season — rather than reacting to an active infestation — is always the better approach. A professional spring inspection allows our technicians to:

  • Identify signs of existing activity before it escalates
  • Locate moisture issues and entry points that make your home vulnerable
  • Recommend the right treatment approach based on species and infestation level
  • Set up preventative treatments to protect your home through the season

Termite damage is typically not covered by homeowner's insurance — which makes prevention and early detection even more financially critical. The cost of a professional inspection and preventative treatment is a fraction of what structural repairs can run.

How Neff Exterminating Treats Termites

Our termite control services are tailored to the specific species and severity of infestation. Treatment options we use include:

Liquid Soil Treatments

A proven method for subterranean termites. A liquid termiticide is applied to the soil around and under the foundation, creating a treated zone that kills termites as they pass through. Modern products are long-lasting and highly effective.

Bait Systems

Monitoring stations placed around your property intercept foraging termites. Once activity is detected, bait is introduced that workers carry back to the colony, eventually eliminating it at the source.

Wood Treatments

For drywood termites or localized infestations, direct wood treatments can be applied to affected areas to kill termites on contact and provide lasting protection.

We'll walk you through which approach makes the most sense for your situation — no one-size-fits-all solutions.
